Lenticular Clouds- or as some may call it.. The UFO!

Lenticular Cloud

In this photo there are two clouds stacked up into one beautiful and striking lenticular cloud on top of Mt. Rainier, US.
Normally, air moves much more horizontally than it does vertically. Sometimes, however, such as when wind comes off of a mountain or a hill, relatively strong vertical oscillations take place as the air stabilizes. The dry air at the top of an oscillation may be quite stratified in moisture content, and hence forms clouds at each layer where the air saturates with moisture. The result can be a lenticular cloud with a strongly layered appearance.

Due to their shape, they have been offered as an explanation for some Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) sightings.
Pictures shown below are also Lenticular Clouds.

  1. I’ve seen lenticular cloudswhen I was visiting Utah, and occasionally in my native UK. Very occasionally.

Nicely composed photograph you put up. Damn it looks cold. Mind you it gets a bit nippy in the Pennines and the Scottish Highlands

  2. More great shots of a phenomenon it’d love to see (and shoot) for myself.

Funny that you should mention UFOs and Mt. Rainier… the term “flying saucer” was coined as a description of a UFO seen there.

    • wow! didn’t know that the term originated from there.. Thanks!
For me its the only reasonable explanation for what people call ‘Flying saucers’. And look at its shape! I mean, I now understand why people might mistake it for a third kind object.. :D

  3. Uma,

I am the only one who sees your post with all of it’s sciency lingo as a brilliant cover story for Actual Aliens……….are you one of them or do they just have you on the payroll?

    • You got me!! :O
Its none.. they have brainwashed me into believing these stuff so that I would post them in wordpress!! Now you don’t go telling anyone or they’ll find you and use their evil hypnotic machine on you!

  4. Well, if I don’t learn something new everyday! Never, in life, have I seen such a thing… Beautiful, and I can’t wait to share this with my favorite antisocial conspiracy theorist… Though, I’m certain there must be other “people” in this vast and beautiful universe…
