In this photo there are two clouds stacked up into one beautiful and striking lenticular cloud on top of Mt. Rainier, US.
Normally, air moves much more horizontally than it does vertically. Sometimes, however, such as when wind comes off of a mountain or a hill, relatively strong vertical oscillations take place as the air stabilizes. The dry air at the top of an oscillation may be quite stratified in moisture content, and hence forms clouds at each layer where the air saturates with moisture. The result can be a lenticular cloud with a strongly layered appearance.
Due to their shape, they have been offered as an explanation for some Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) sightings.
Pictures shown below are also Lenticular Clouds.

I would like to ‘like ‘ this but nothing happens if I do
A lot of my friends have been saying that. I dunno what is wrong. Must be a wordpress thing. But I’m glad you stopped by to comment. Thanks a lot 😀
Maybe a silly question for melouisef, but are you logged in when you try to ‘like’? You cannot if you are not. We had some spectacular ‘lenticular’ clouds here a little while ago, though not quite as awesome as those you posted; have a look at:

Yea we need to be logged in to be able to like a post, but somehow logged in bloggers also seem to be having trouble in hitting the like button.. But thats ok, I always appreciate getting comments 😀
So incredibly cool. I grew up around mountains and I desperately miss them now, in MN. Thanks so much for stopping by my blog!
It was my pleasure :).. I hope you get to visit the place you are missing : )
I’ve seen lenticular cloudswhen I was visiting Utah, and occasionally in my native UK. Very occasionally.
Nicely composed photograph you put up. Damn it looks cold. Mind you it gets a bit nippy in the Pennines and the Scottish Highlands
That is amazing that you’ve seen it yourself! Thanks a lot for dropping by : )
we see this often where i live. i call them cloaking devices.
haha.. thats nice.. Do share some pictures the next time you see them : D I have never seen it myself!

Those are beautiful!
😀
Eye opening!
😀
More great shots of a phenomenon it’d love to see (and shoot) for myself.
Funny that you should mention UFOs and Mt. Rainier… the term “flying saucer” was coined as a description of a UFO seen there.
wow! didn’t know that the term originated from there.. Thanks!
For me its the only reasonable explanation for what people call ‘Flying saucers’. And look at its shape! I mean, I now understand why people might mistake it for a third kind object.. 😀
those are so beautiful! thanks for sharing this! z
My pleasure.. I’m glad you liked it 😀
Stunning images. Nature never fails to astound!
😀
Uma,
I am the only one who sees your post with all of it’s sciency lingo as a brilliant cover story for Actual Aliens……….are you one of them or do they just have you on the payroll?
RidicuRyder
You got me!! :O
Its none.. they have brainwashed me into believing these stuff so that I would post them in wordpress!! Now you don’t go telling anyone or they’ll find you and use their evil hypnotic machine on you!
Uma,
We have immunity with most of those machines – you have to get experiences dating aliens first (if they don’t kill you). So you develope immunity.
RR
I have seen a few of these formations over the years and they are really spectacular. I love the sunset photograph 😀
That is great! Unfortunately these cloud formations are extremely rare to find from where I come from : (
Well, if I don’t learn something new everyday! Never, in life, have I seen such a thing… Beautiful, and I can’t wait to share this with my favorite antisocial conspiracy theorist… Though, I’m certain there must be other “people” in this vast and beautiful universe…
Thanks a lot for the reblog Vivien. I’m really glad you liked the post 😀
Reblogged this on Dark Acts Bible: Glass Half Empty, Base Cracked… and commented:
To all the UFO-hunters in my life, and there are a few… While I still believe that there are other “people,” somewhere, in the universe, we definitely need to check this out!
Those are absolutely unearthly photographs.
That is just the coolest thing ever, got to share that on fb. Hey thanks for stopping at Boomdeeadda too. 🙂
Thank you so much for the share 😀 .. and i really loved your blog 😀

And what an amazing place to grow up at!!
WOW! unique!
Simply amazing and incredible. I have never seen anything quite like these before. Beautiful!
Amazing! In Banff once I saw one of the cone-shaped ones and it is very interesting to learn what caused that to happen.
