Tiger’s Nest Monastery

Tigers Nest monastery- Amazing architecture

This construction that looks like it is re-defying gravity is a monastery in Bhutan hanging 3,120 metres on a cliff!! The place is called Taktshang or Tiger’s Nest monastery and it is situated in the middle of the Bhutanese mountains, several hours outside of Paro.

It was built during the end of the 17th Century on the spot where saint Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) meditated. Legend has it that he flew to this place on the back of a tiger and hence the name Tiger’s Nest.

To reach the monastery we’d have to trek through steep zigzag trails of pine forests. This is a place where the Earth is literally holding upon its shoulders an unbelievable construction of man which serves to glorify the heaven above and the earth below.

  1. That just seems to defy the laws of gravity. How would they construct that way out on a cliff side? Amazing. We’ve had these lame roofers at the condo for a month and a half, that place would be a life long job for them. I love the windows there too.

  2. amazing place, how did they manage to build it!!!??? and if you drop something…. it’s going to be difficult to retrieve it… not a good idea to play ball up there… 🙂

  3. Who knew? Simply priceless carpentry and scenery. I can’t even imagine being on THAT work crew…”you’re going to pay me how much to THAT?” Unfortunately, they probably were paid mere coins a day. :(. Thanks for sharing.

  4. The things people build for their gods. Do you wonder about how many men worked on it, or how many years it took to build. I’ll have to google it. I am amazed by these, but this is the most colorful of the cliff built monasteries I’ve seen.

  5. Hi Uma,
Thanks for passing by and liking a post. 🙂
You have some amazing photos on your Blog and one of the few (I’ve come across) using the Mixfolio theme.

  6. What an amazing picture! Do you ever wonder how they built that? I always wondered how some of the castles of old were built right into a mountain or on the edge of a cliff… without modern technology… amazing! 😀 Thanks for sharing!

  7. Another amazing post, I learn so many cool things from your blog 🙂

Fantastic photos, and an amazing architectural achievement!

  8. Thanks for coming by my blog! I love this photo. It reminds me of a monastery I stayed at in Greece. Monasteries and isolation seem to go together–and the extent to which communities will go to find the out-of-the-way place!
