This construction that looks like it is re-defying gravity is a monastery in Bhutan hanging 3,120 metres on a cliff!! The place is called Taktshang or Tiger’s Nest monastery and it is situated in the middle of the Bhutanese mountains, several hours outside of Paro.
It was built during the end of the 17th Century on the spot where saint Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) meditated. Legend has it that he flew to this place on the back of a tiger and hence the name Tiger’s Nest.
To reach the monastery we’d have to trek through steep zigzag trails of pine forests. This is a place where the Earth is literally holding upon its shoulders an unbelievable construction of man which serves to glorify the heaven above and the earth below.
Absolutely incredible beauty. So peaceful yet such grandeur. I would love to spend a month there. Great post Uma!
Thanks a lot! Hopefully I would get to go there one day too 😀
Oh my, breathtaking! Thank you for sharing 🙂
My pleasure.. 😀
Wow! Amazing.
😀
it’s amazing the things you find, Uma 😉 I love this place…absolutely love it.
Thanks a lot.. You have made my day 😀
likewise and it’s so early out here! 🙂 well almost noon.
That just seems to defy the laws of gravity. How would they construct that way out on a cliff side? Amazing. We’ve had these lame roofers at the condo for a month and a half, that place would be a life long job for them. I love the windows there too.
I know!! it’s just amazing and imagine how they must have built it 400 years ago!!
Gorgeous!
😀
I have visited places that I could have stayed forever. Certainly, this too seems such a place.
I know I would never leave if I reach this place!! ^_^
Outstanding that people could build such a structure in such a place. I remain constantly amazed by people. Fantastic photographs.
It is amazing!! They didn’t even have any new age technology or machines either!
amazing place, how did they manage to build it!!!??? and if you drop something…. it’s going to be difficult to retrieve it… not a good idea to play ball up there… 🙂
haha.. no you definitely don’t want to be playing ball up here!!
What an enchanting looking perch. Looks like fine porcelain.
haha.. yea it does look like that!!:D
Hi Uma! *waving* This is truly a masterpiece! How breathtaking! ……Paula x
Hey Paula.. *waving back* 😀 so good to see you again..
Truly amazing! Thanks for posting this!
You’re welcome.. I’m just happy you liked it 😀
UMA,
Okay, it’s official…….I’m addicted to your Blue Monster!
RR
haha.. yeaayy!! Blue Monster happy.. 😀
Wow! Amazing place.
Absoluty spectacular images! I think a eagle’s nest rather than tiger’s
Who knew? Simply priceless carpentry and scenery. I can’t even imagine being on THAT work crew…”you’re going to pay me how much to THAT?” Unfortunately, they probably were paid mere coins a day. :(. Thanks for sharing.
The monks built the monastery themselves.. So i don’t think they got any money for it at all. Just the inner satisfaction!
Wow…priceless handiwork.
I can’t even begin to imagine how they built this, and how they transported the building materials to the site. Amazing feat and beautiful architecture.
The things people build for their gods. Do you wonder about how many men worked on it, or how many years it took to build. I’ll have to google it. I am amazed by these, but this is the most colorful of the cliff built monasteries I’ve seen.
Wow. Pretty amazing.
Hi Uma it’s gorgeous!
Hello Natuurfreak..So happy to see you again 😀
Dreamy pictures that renew the lore and lure of the Orient.
Looks beautiful and unbelievable! It is there to prove a point that anything is possible! I wonder, how they carried all the materials needed for the construction!
So true!! People have a hard time just hiking to this place.. It must have been real hard work to get this construction done!!
I wonder too! Now I’m wondering about your obession with coconuts– tell me more.
I wonder too. Tell me more about your coconut craze.
Hi Uma,
Thanks for passing by and liking a post. 🙂
You have some amazing photos on your Blog and one of the few (I’ve come across) using the Mixfolio theme.
What an amazing picture! Do you ever wonder how they built that? I always wondered how some of the castles of old were built right into a mountain or on the edge of a cliff… without modern technology… amazing! 😀 Thanks for sharing!
That reply was for coconutcraze. Will reply to her comment above.
Another amazing post, I learn so many cool things from your blog 🙂
Fantastic photos, and an amazing architectural achievement!
Rohan.
Thanks a lot Rohan! I’m really glad that you learn stuff from here.. Its the best compliment for my blog 🙂
Thanks for coming by my blog! I love this photo. It reminds me of a monastery I stayed at in Greece. Monasteries and isolation seem to go together–and the extent to which communities will go to find the out-of-the-way place!
